    Did You Hear

Geeky Video Game Wars – Did You Hear? week of Friday, October 27th, 2023

Ashley Victoria RobinsonBy Ashley Victoria RobinsonOctober 27, 20234 Mins Read

Did You Hear? is a weekly examination of headlines in the entertainment industry and a take on what they could mean for the future of the industry and (often), the little geeky bubble that we occupy!

War of the Geeky Video Games

On September 6th Starfield released for Xbox and PC and sci-fi gaming fans flocked to social media to share their latest obsession.

On October 20th Spider-Man 2 for Sony PS5 released and set the geek internet on fire. 2.5 million copies sold in 24 hours.

THEN this week on Wednesday The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria dropped for PC gamers (eyeing a December 5th release for PS5 and early 2024 release for Xbox), and Tolkien lovers the world over got very excited very quickly about a new game to play.

Fun fact: I actually wrote about Return to Moria on this week’s Did You Hear? feature. Be sure to check it out for more details on the game!

The result has been something of a console war for geek supremacy. PC Gamers are feeling rather smug to have two awesome options at their fingertips with PS5 owners sitting confident in their console choice with Return to Moria safely on the horizon just a few weeks away.

Looking to the future PC Gamers may not be feeling so smug!

Yesterday Comicbook.com reported the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI would not be available for PC on the day of release.

As of my writing this there is no formal release date for Grand Theft Auto VI, simply a 2024 ballpark announcement. Studio Rockstar has not run the tightest ship leading up to the release, as Comicbook.com points out:

“The game did leak last fall and gave us some idea of the direction Rockstar is going in, but with a game as massive as this, you won’t be able to get the full picture through an hour of unfinished gameplay.

Per Comicbook.com and unnamed insider leaked the PC problem of it all:

“Internally, the PC version is more buggy than the console versions. Rockstar wouldn’t want to end up with a Star Wars Jedi Survivor or The Last of Us Part I PC situation for the most anticipated game. I’ve heard from various sources that the devs expect VI PC release to happen after citing more time needed. Hopefully, it’s a delay of a few months.”

This follows in the proud footsteps of Grand Theft Auto V which released its PC version a full 18 months after console games were out in the world.

Video games are geeky by definition, but to have three deeply genre games currently dominating the landscape is pretty awesome. Any of us would be thrilled to have just Spider-Man 2 for PS5 to occupy our time. Remember the Elden Ring boom of 2022? While debates are already raging across social media platforms I want to ask Spoilerites right here and right now: what are you playing this weekend?

    Richard Roundtree Passes

On Tuesday of this week iconic actor Richard Roundtree passed away. Roundtree had a prolific career and is most well-known for his portrayal of the popular detective Shaft who has enjoyed adaptation across mediums.

If you’ve never watched the original (1971), Shaft, this is certainly your sign from the Universe to upgrade your film education and do so.

In a statement to CNN Roundtree’s theatrical talent agent Artist and Representatives revealed:

“Artists & Representatives Agency mourns the loss of our friend and client Richard Roundtree. His trailblazing career changed the face of entertainment around the globe and his enduring legacy will be felt for generations to come,” their included statement read. “Our hearts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

He was 81 years old and, aside from Shaft, had notable roles in: Roots, Se7en, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and the 2019 remake of Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson.
