Previously in Power Rangers Prime: The Rangers might finally have their powers, but they still have a long way to go before they’re a real team. They’ll need to learn fast, though, as one group delves into a mysterious and potentially dangerous underground labyrinth known as The Belly, while another explores a more… diplomatic solution to rescuing Mark.
THE LONG GAME
Power Rangers Prime #7 begins six months before issue one, as Markon and Orion work in the robotics lab, and accidentally revive a tiny mechanical T. rex that has been floating around for more than a year (last seen in the Free Comic Book Day special). Cut to the present, with Orion now the Prime Pink Ranger, forced to fight a mutant T. Rex with only Bulk and Rita Repulsa for backup. While he fights for his life in the sewers, Red Ranger Lauren finds her escape route blocked by a human/rhinoceros hybrid who wants a fight of his own. Yellow Ranger Val and Black Ranger Jun have demorphed in the hopes that they can get help from one of their parents, as her father is the mayor of Angel Grove, while his mother is the commander of the Eltarian Youth Corps. She gets a little bit distracted when her ex-boyfriend Ryan arrives, but he seems to be willing to listen to her and not bring down his V.R. Troopers on their head.
And it’s only after all that occurs that they realize nobody knows where the Blue Ranger is.
IS ANY SIDE THE RIGHT ONE?
Perhaps my favorite part of the issue is the sight of a mutant Tyrannosaurus wearing brass knuckles that say “BOOM”, using the publisher’s logo, a fun sight gag. I’m not sure whether the rhino warrior is a reference to Rocksteady, but given the sheer amount of lore the issue contains, the answer is probably “Sure, why not?” The four assembled Rangers spend the whole issue at odds with one another, only choosing to unite near the end, just as Rita reveals that her underground expedition has, in fact, been in search of the Power Center, the Mighty Morphin Rangers’ HQ. That interesting reveal, combined with the VR Troopers finally defying their orders, starts moving the plot in a different direction. Since we’ve been sloooowly assembling the Power Rangers Prime team since issue one, it’s some welcome development. The art continues to be really strong, with Michael Yg making the Prime Ranger designs somewhat bulkier and more armored than most traditional Ranger attire. In some cases, I might have been annoyed at the addition of armored plates and greeblies, but here it not only fits the tone of the piece, they’re really cool designs, to boot.
BOTTOM LINE: FEELING VERY SCATTERED
I am enjoying where Power Rangers Prime #7 is going, but much of the issue’s plot is scattered throughout Angel Grove with an equally scattered team of Rangers, which is starting to feel frustrating to me as a reader, earning 3 out of 5 stars overall. The parts that work, work well, and the art is good enough that I feel most readers will agree with me that it should prove worth the wait.

POWER RANGERS PRIME #7
The first six issues of Power Rangers Prime feel like they'd have comfortably been a two or three issue arc, and while I am enjoying what's happening, I feel like the focus on how disjointed this Ranger "team" is makes the story feel equally unstable.
